Overcoming BioFouling

This presents the greatest challenge for environmental scientists trying to measure long term parameter trends in warm shallow oceans such as Australia. In cooler water masses, instruments are able to be used in conjunction with copper foil and anti-fungicides such as TBT (Tri Butyl Tin). Shallow tropical oceans however have shown these options to fail with barnacles growing on the actual copper foil. JFE have built up considerable experience with dealing with bio-fouling and acknowledge that the only means to keep instruments measuring optical parameters or conductivity, is to use mechanical wipers or piston plungers
